I remembered about this old classroom blog this morning, when trying to think of a way to display student work during this crazy time! We just started back 100% virtual and as strange as it feels, the kids are doing amazing! My new group of super sweet 5th graders are rocking online school. They log in on time every day, ask questions, complete assignments, and are blowing my mind with the quality of work they are producing. We are trying as hard as we can to keep as many procedures in place that will transfer over to in-person school. This week we started watching the Morning Announcements, created by one of our teachers! They are fun and a great way to still allow kids to see other teachers and hear their birthday being announced! We are also still doing Morning Meeting every morning. This has been a great way for us to connect as a community, even though we are not physically in the same space.
Plasma Ball
During our science unit, one of the students brought in a plasma ball for us to experiment with. Students had a lot of fun touching it and seeing how it reacted. Thanks Elliot for bringing it in!
Exploring Volume with Cubes and Marshmallows
To make Volume a little more interesting, my math class created 3 dimensional shapes using both cubes and marshmallows. They then had to figure out the volume and check their answer by counting the square units. Students were also given a specific volume and had to create a shape with that volume. It was interesting to see the different forms the shapes took, even though the had the same volume.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
We had a short little Valentine’s Day party. Due to scheduling conflicts, we had the party at about 9:30 in the morning. Students then went and watched an assembly for about an hour and a half. With all the sugar they ate I was very proud of them for being able to sit so still during the assembly. Also, one very artsy student, made everyone in the class heart glasses to wear for Valentine’s day. We loved them.
Winter Party Games!
Thanks to our fabulous classroom volunteers, our class had some minute to win it games to play during our Winter Party. They also made cute hot chocolate reindeer and ate lots of goodies. It was a great time!
Winter Sing Along Fun
The Winter Sing Along was a first for me. I thought that it was so much fun! Everyone in that room was so excited and everyone loved participating.
5th Grade Musical
I was so impressed by the performance that the fifth graders put on. This musical was fun and the kids did a fantastic job. Hopefully, everyone got a chance to see it.
Mock Election at Henley!
We were so lucky to be able to participate in a pretend election at Henley. Henley students chose candidates and created presentations for our students to see/hear. Along with the presentations, some of the Henley students also tried to influence our students through stickers and candy. At the end of the presentations, Brownsville students went into the computer lab and voted for the candidate that they thought should win. It was a fun experience, as well as a way for students to get an idea of what trying to chose the best candidate is really like.
